With the fall of the Congress party in the 1989 elections, the age of coalitions was inaugurated. After 1989, a number of political parties developed, making it impossible for any one of them to win an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. The formation of the ruling coalition during this time period relied heavily on regional parties. Thus, a protracted period of coalition politics in India began with the election of 1989. There have since been nine centralised governments, all of which have either been coalition governments or minority governments supported by other parties that did not join the government. Any government could only be formed during this time with the involvement or backing of numerous regional parties.
