A democracy is a system in which the people elect the government. Every member of a nation that practises democracy has an equal right to vote for representatives. Everyone in the nation has the right to live their lives with dignity and the right to ask questions. They have all of these political rights because of democracy. Democracy does not, however, seem to be very effective in addressing economic disparities because of the unequal distribution of wealth. The wealthy receive an extremely disproportionate amount of wealth and income. Even the percentage of wealthy people in the population is increasing. Because of their increasing poverty, it has become increasingly difficult for the poor to purchase the necessities of everyday life. Various features of political equality are successful under democracy but have not been very successful in reducing economic inequality. This does not mean democracy is bad, but efforts must be taken to reduce economic inequality.
