The Mandal Commission in India was appointed in 1979 by the government of India. The Commission was officially named the Second Backward Classes Commission. However, it was popularly known as the Mandan Commission as the Commission was chaired by B.P. Mandal. The Commission was appointed to serve an important function in the country. It was required to give specific criteria to recognise the socially and educationally backward classes and further to make recommendations so that people from that group could make progress and have equal opportunities. The Commission presented its analysis and recommendations in 1980 (these recommendations were implemented later by the government).
