Decomposing organic matter produces gas, which is more heat efficient than kerosene, dung cake, and charcoal. Biogas plants are established at the community, cooperative and individual levels. Plants that use cow dung are known as "gobar gas plants" in the countryside of India. These offer farmers two benefits: energy form and improved liquid fertiliser quality. Biogas is by far the most efficient use of cow dung. It improves fertiliser quality and also prevents tree loss. In rural areas, people burn firewood and cow dung cake as fuel.
