Canal colonies were large settlements in Punjab. These colonies were located in the western regions of Punjab. They were settled down for agriculture through the construction of Canals during British imperialism. Between 1885 and 1940, the British Raj built nine canal colonies on the inter-fluvial tracts east of the river Beas and Sutlej and the west shore of the Jhelum river. As a result, the Punjab region underwent an agricultural revolution, and self-sufficiency production was replaced by commercialised production.
