The 1865 Forest Act divided forests into three categories. The Forest Act, formulated in 1865 was amended twice. It was first amended in 1878 and, for the second time, modified in 1927. The 1878 Forest Act divided forests into protected, reserved, and forest categories. Dietrich Brandis helped the British colonial government set up the Indian Forest Service in 1864. They aimed to protect the forest resources so that the timber in the forests did not get compromised and their railway and shipbuilding projects did not get interrupted or cut short.
