The election of Janpad was held for Raja. The tribal rulers of small states or the leader of Jana (people or tribe) were known as Janapadas. The leaders were also known as Rajas. There weren't any fixed protocols for the election of Janapads. The rajas were elected as he was powerful and could show their strength. Sometimes to show its supremacy, the leader convinces Jana to rule over the area. And the to-be raja had held and participated in Ashwamedha yagnas. He was automatically declared Raja by other rulers or rajas.
