Giuseppe Garibaldi organised the Red Shirts, a corps of volunteers for the Italian movement, in 1867. They were called 'Red Shirts' because they used to wear them as a dress which gave them an identity. He fought for Italian independence and worked for Italian unification. Through his movement, he tried to unify politics and help create Italy. The expedition by this revolutionary group led to the annexation of Sicily, southern Italy, the Marche and Umbria to the kingdom of Sardinia. The volunteers of Red Shirts were also called Garibaldi.
