The above statement is true. Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali started the Khilafat movement. In the first world war, Ottoman Empire was defeated. It led to the removal of the Caliph, the spiritual head of the Islamic world. The Muslims in India also expressed their dissent by raising the issue of the Caliph. This movement was Khilafat Movement. The Khilafat movement was started by the Ali brothers, Muhammed Ali and Shaukat Ali, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi. The movement started as an Islamic movement but soon converged into a nationalist struggle with the launch of the Non-cooperation movement.
