Rabindranath Tagore started Shantiniketan in 1901. The bad experience of his school days in Calcutta shaped Tagore’s ideas about education. He wanted to set up a school where the child was happy, free, creative, and able to explore thoughts and desires. Tagore believed that childhood is a time of self-learning, outside the rigid and restricting discipline of the schooling system that the British setup. Tagore believed the existing schools killed the natural desire of the child to be creative and have a sense of wonder.
