Detailed Solution

The above statement is true.
Before the 19th century, caste was the basis for social division. Most regions had caste-based divisions of the population. Kshatriyas and Brahmins regarded themselves as belonging to higher castes. Others were positioned after them, including merchants and moneylenders (commonly referred to as Vaishyas). Peasants and artisans like weavers and potters then emerged (referred to as Shudras). The lowest caste members were those who labored to maintain towns and villages clean or did activities that upper caste members regarded as  "untouchables" by the upper castes. They were forbidden from going into temples, using the upper castes' wells for water, or bathing in their ponds.
