In most tribal groups, there was a strict division of labour on gender basis. For example, in Chait, women clear the cut stalks which were ripped. Men cut large trees and go hunting. For hunting, bamboo traps were used. Similarly in the case of Baiga, women were only allowed to gather roots or kanda and mahua seeds. Baigas saw themselves as the people of the forest. They should only live on forest products. In the case of Dongria Kondh, women collected leaves from forest to make plates.
