Therefore the British promoted the cultivation of Silk to meet the growing demand of the market. The Santhal tribe community reared cocoons for silk in the area of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. The Silk traders sent agents to these tribes to give them loans and collect cocoons. Whereas in the markets they were sold at five times the price.
