The Company decided to improve vernacular education after 1854. Primary education in India was based on the vernacular languages. It was imparted through pathshalas. The Company government didn’t interfere in the working of pathshalas. However, in 1854, they shifted their focus towards the spread of vernacular language. It decided to regulate the pathshalas and took several steps like a government Pandit was appointed to look after 3-4 schools. A system of annual examinations was introduced to test learning.
