The sepoys objected to the use of new cartridges. The East India Company faced a massive revolt at Meerut in 1857. It was a reaction because of many accumulated reasons. But, the main issue was regarding the cartridge used in the new arms. It was believed that cartridges used for these new rifles were greased with the fat of cows and pigs. These cartridges need to be removed during the firing process with the help of the mouth. It hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Muslims among the sepoys. They refused to use it which gradually resulted in a revolt in 1857.
