With the arrival of British forest rule, tribals' and jhum cultivators' lives were considerably affected. The Britishers were uncomfortable with the shifting cultivation groups. And their efforts to settle these tribal groups also failed. To establish their control over forests and forest products, the Britishers declared the forest as state property. For timber production, some parts of the forest were classified as the Reserved forest. As a result, tribals were prohibited from entering, gathering forest products, or practising Jhum cultivation in these areas. Gradually, this restriction resulted in protests.
