One of the most important dates in the religious and political history of Eastern India is the year 1230. The Puri goddess Puruottamma-Jagannatha was ritually accepted as the sole state deity of Orissa and as the spiritual leader of the Imperial Gagas by King Anagabhma. Anagabhma and his descendants claimed to rule by divine will and as the son (Putra) and servant of the Lord of Puri (Ruta). Most likely in the same year, Anagabhma added the god Balabhadra to Puri's present Jagannatha triad. Thus, the Gajapati kingdom of Orissa's ideology as well as the final stages of the Jagannatha cult of Puri were both established in the year 1230.
