The city of Paris was in fear on July 14, 1789. The king had given orders for troops to enter the city. In front of the town hall, about 7,000 men and women came together and decided to establish a people's militia. In pursuit of weapons, they broke into a variety of government structures. A contingent of several hundred individuals eventually marched to the eastern section of the city and stormed the Bastille, a fortress prison where they hoped to find hidden weaponry. The Bastille commander was slain, and the inmates were freed in the ensuing gun battle. However, because it represented the king's autocratic power, all despised the Bastille.
