The Kathaks were previously a caste of storytellers who adorned their performances with gestures and singing in North Indian temples. The expansion of the Bhakti movement started in the 14th and 16th centuries, at the same time as Kathak underwent its own changes as time went on. Kathak was performed in the Mughal court. Here it developed into the dance it is today and established its current qualities. After that, it developed into two different customs, or gharanas: one in the Rajasthani courts (Jaipur), and the other in Lucknow.
