Rajputana was a South Asian province that included what is now the Indian state of Rajasthan, parts of the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, as well as the bordering regions of Sindh in what is now southern Pakistan. The major settlements west of the Aravalli Hills were known as Rajputana at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The British government then referred to its dependencies in the area of the modern-day Indian state of Rajasthan as the Rajputana Agency. In the Rajputana Agency, there were 18 princely kingdoms, 2 chiefdoms, and the British district of Ajmer-Merwara. This British term was used until the 1949 constitution, when "Rajasthan'' took its place.
