The Axis Powers comprised Italy, Germany, and Japan, and the Allied Powers included the UK, France, the USSR, and the USA. The war began when Germany attacked Poland in 1939. Following this, France and England joined hands with Poland, thus forming the Allies. After Germany signed a Tripartite Pact with Italy, and Japan, the following year, the war became global. Hitler ascended to the pinnacle of his power around this time, exploiting his powers to install puppet regimes in several parts of Europe. Hitler next aimed to conquer Eastern Europe, and as part of this plan, he attacked the Soviet Union at Stalingrad. Unfortunately for Hitler, the Axis powers committed the historic mistake of exposing the German front on the east to Soviet armies and the western front to aerial bombing by the British. Thus, the Battle of Stalingrad handed out a crushing defeat to the Axis Powers and enabled the Soviet Union to rule Europe for 50 years.
