Samudragupta defeated many rulers, including the rulers of Aryavarta. As per tradition, he occupied their territory and merged it with his own. Thus, ruining their image as rulers and presenting them as weak kings to rule or safeguard their territory. However, in the case of Dakshinapatha, he did not merge their territory into his own. Though he defeated the rulers of Dakshinapatha, he offered them to act as his vassals and pay annual tributes to his kingdom. The major reason which persuaded him to take this step was that the kingdom of Dakshinapatha was huge, and it would be challenging to safeguard such an empire.
