Priests composed the later Vedic texts like- the Samaveda, Yajur Veda, and Atharvaveda and described the rules of the society and ritualistic practices. There were several different groups in society at this time. The priests divided people into four varnas and gave each varna different sets of functions. The varnas were hereditary. The first varna and topmost in the hierarchy were brahmins. Their task was to study and teach the Vedas, perform sacrifices and receive gifts. On the second mat were the rulers, also known as Kshatriyas. Their prime function was to fight battles and protect people. The vish, or the vaishyas, gained third place. Their chief task was to carry out occupations like- farmers, herders, and traders. Priests allowed the Kshatriyas and the vaishyas to perform sacrifices. Priests gave the last place to the Shudras, who served the other three groups and could not perform any rituals. These included crafts persons, hunters and gatherers, and people who performed burials and cremation
