They reacted against the various British policies that hindered their expansion. They wanted protection against the import of foreign goods, and the rupee-pound exchange rate will discourage imports. They established the Congress of Industry and Commerce of India to organise their business interests in 1920 and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in 1927. They financed the civil disobedience movement and refused to buy or sell imported goods. Most industrialists considered the colonial policies that restricted business activities oppressive. They wanted to get rid of them so that trade and industry could flourish, thereby contributing to the growth of the Indian economy. After reaping huge profits from World War I, the business classes were eager to expand their businesses. They thus saw the civil disobedience movement as an opportunity to assert their interests and meet their demands.
