The movement in Awadh was against the powerful and the landlords, who demanded exorbitant rents and a variety of other taxes from the peasants. The peasant movement demanded reduced income, the abolition of the diet, and a social boycott of oppressive landlords. In many places, gangs of deer dhobi were organised by panchayats to deprive homeowners of services, including barbers and launderers. In June 1920, Jawaharlal Nehru began touring the villages of Awadh, talking to the villagers and trying to understand their grievances. Hence, in October 1920, the Oudh Kisan Sabha was established, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, Baba Ramchandra, and several others. In a month, more than 300 agencies were established in villages in the region. So when the non-cooperation movement began the following year, Congress attempted to integrate the struggles of the Awadh farmers into the larger struggle.
