Detailed Solution

The sex of a child is determined by the combination of sex chromosomes they inherit from their parents at the time of conception. The father's sperm can carry either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome, while the mother's egg always carries an X chromosome.

If a sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes the egg, the resulting zygote will have two X chromosomes and develop into a female child (XX). If a sperm carrying a Y chromosome fertilizes the egg, the resulting zygote will have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome and develop into a male child (XY).

Therefore, the sex of a child is determined at the moment of fertilization by the combination of sex chromosomes they receive from their parents. Hence the male gamete determines the sex of the child.
