The transportation of materials in plants occurs through the xylem and phloem tissues. The vascular tissues are involved in transportation. Leaves, are involved in the process of photosynthesis and the exchange of gases but are also involved in the transportation of materials through the veins. 

As the xylem tissues age they become inactive and are no longer involved in the transport of water and minerals. Instead, they are used for the storage of resins and gums. However, they provide structural support to the plant.
