The process of separating an insoluble solid like sand suspended in a liquid by letting the insoluble solid settle at the bottom of the container is called sedimentation. The insoluble solid settles at the bottom, which is known as sediments, and the clear liquid comes up, which is known as supernatant. The pouring out of this clear liquid into another container without disturbing the layer of insoluble solid is called decantation.
