The posterior pituitary, also called the neurohypophysis has pars nervosa. Although the posterior pituitary does not synthesise hormones, it does store and release oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone or vasopressin secreted by the hypothalamus. Hypothalamic–hypophyseal tract begins in the hypothalamus and ends near blood capillaries in the posterior pituitary. This tract helps in the transport of hormones.
