About 600 years before Gutenberg, Chinese monks used a technique called block printing, in which wooden blocks are covered in ink and pressed onto sheets of paper, to transfer ink to paper. The "Diamond Sutra," an ancient Buddhist treatise, was written in 868 in China's Tang (T'ang) Dynasty (618–909) and is one of the earliest books still in existence that was printed in this way. The book, which was hidden for over a thousand years in a cave not far from Dunhuang, China, before it was discovered in 1900, is currently kept in the British Library in London. As early as the ninth century, Japan and Korea were also using the carved wooden blocks employed for this early type of printing. Prior to the invention of movable type, private printers in these locations produced histories and treatises on Buddhism and Taoism using both metal and wood blocks.
