Savitribai Phule is hailed as a leader in women's education. Her husband, social reformer Jyotirao Phule, opened what is thought to be India's first girls' school here 171 years ago. Her spouse taught her to read and write, inspired by contemporary concepts and reformist fervour. Savitribai attended a teachers' training programme and earned her teaching certification in 1847. She then served as the school's first teacher when the pair established a school for females in Bhidewada in Pune city in 1848. The pair had to deal with a lot of abuse from conservative individuals who detested the notion of women going to school.
