According to the inheritance rule of the British, only the biological son of the King can inherit the throne. In reality, this policy was an instrument used by the British to expand and annex the territory in the hand of Indian rulers and strengthen British rule. For example, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi wanted the company to recognize her adopted son as the heir to the throne after the death of the King. But, the British did not accept it on the grounds that it is her adopted son which leads to a conflict and battle between Rani of Jhansi and the British, ultimately the death of Rani Lakshmi Bai.
