On May 1, 1960, the Bombay presidency, which was a bilingual territory, was divided into two separate states. They were Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Bombay presidency, like other states of India, was also reorganised based on languages. The Gujarati-speaking region was made as the state of Gujarat and Marathi speaking region was made into Maharashtra. Similarly, the Madras presidency was divided into Madras and Andhra Pradesh in 1953. The formation of Andhra Pradesh was the first ever division done based on language in India.
