Major lipids of cell membrane are phospholipids. Cholesterol is present in animal cell membrane. Phospholipids have polar heads towards outside or aqueous environment and non-polar saturated hydrocarbon tails (fatty acids) towards interior of membrane. Fluid Mosaic model states the lipid bilayer forms the quasi-fluid part to membrane that enables the lateral movement of proteins. Proteins are of two types as peripheral and integral proteins based on ease of extraction and the relative position in the membrane.
