A holoenzyme has a protein or nucleic acid part known as apoenzyme and a nonprotein or non-nucleic acid part known as cofactor. Only the apoenzyme has active sites. Cofactor may be organic or inorganic metal ions. The organic factor is prosthetic group if it is tightly bound to the active site. If bound loosely only at the time of catalysis it is known as coenzyme. Inorganic cofactors are always intimately associated with active site of enzyme.
