Aorta is the largest artery in the body but it supplies oxygenated blood to the body since all the arteries (except pulmonary artery) carry oxygenated blood. Arteries have pressure enough to reach places even opposing the gravity to reach organs above the heart. Veins, on the other hand, carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein). Valves are present in the veins to prevent backflow of blood since veins carry blood in anti-gravity towards the heart from bottom of the body.
