Muhammad al-Idris was an Arab geographer and advisor to the Norman King of Sicily, Roger Sicily. Kitab nuzhat al-dirtytq fikhtirq al-fq, one of the greatest works of mediaeval geography, was written by him ("The delightful excursion of an eager man through the regions of the world"). He was born in Sabtah, where his forefathers had fled following the fall of Málaga, their last foothold in Spain, in 1057. He spent most of his youth travelling in North Africa and Spain and appears to have gained detailed and precise knowledge of the two domains. He is known to have studied for several years in Cordoba and to have lived in Marrakech, Morocco, and Qusaninah (Constantine), Algeria. His travels took him to numerous locations throughout Western Europe, including Portugal, northern Spain, the French Atlantic coast, and southern England. When he was 16, he travelled to Asia Minor.
