On April 21, 1526, in North India, the Delhi Sultanate under Lodi and Babur's invading armies engaged in the First Battle of Panipat. The Mughal Empire was inaugurated at that time. One of the earliest conflicts involved field artillery and gunpowder-fired weapons. The considerably larger governing army of Ibrahim Lodi, Sultan of Delhi, was routed in 1526 by the Mughal forces of Babur, the Timurid ruler of Kabulistan. The conflict took place on April 21 close to the hamlet of Panipat in the modern Indian state of Haryana, a region that has seen several pivotal conflicts for dominance of Northern India since the eleventh century.
