The Food Corporation of India (FCI) procures a stock of wheat and rice. The government buys food grains from the farmers through FCI to create a buffer stock. It is done to prevent shortages of food grains during an unforeseen natural calamity. The government buys wheat and rice from the farmers at a pre-decided price, known as the MinimumSupport Price (MSP). It stores the procured food grains in granaries and often distributes them in deficit areas among the poor section of society. A calamity can not be suspected earlier and hence can affect the supply of food grains. By creating a buffer stock, the government reduces this risk.
