According to the Prashasti Delhi Sanskrit, the empire of Sultan Ghiyasuddin Balban stretched from Bengal (Gauda) in the east to Ghazni (Gajjana) in Afghanistan in the west. It also covers the whole of southern India (Dravida). He brought peace and order to the state and restored the power and prestige of the Sultan after thirty years of near anarchy since the Iltutmish (d. 1236). Balban ruled with an iron fist during his tenure. He disbanded the "Chahalgani," a group of forty of the most influential nobles in the court. Balban wanted to set up an effective spy system in the style of Umayyad Barid to ensure that everyone was loyal to the crown. Sultan Balban has a well-organized and solid intelligence system. Balban used braids, aka spies, to spy on his officials. In each department, he placed reporters and news editors undercover. The spies were a separate agency that reported only to the monarch.
