Ignoring the plight of the farmers, the Bombay Presidency raised the tax rates by 22%. Despite petitions and appeals from civic teams and farmers to review this unjust tax rate hike in the grave scenario, the government set to travel ahead with collection. In the Gregorian calendar month of 1928, farmers in Bardoli invited Vallabhai Patel to launch the protest movement whereby all of them resolved not to pay taxes. Patel united to require the leadership role solely once obtaining assurances from the farmers of their resolve to the movement. Gandhiji additionally lent support to the movement through his writings in Young India magazine.
