India had been known in foreign countries for its fine cotton. Large quantities of cotton were exported to European and other countries' markets. In the 19th century, cotton manufacturing in Britain began to expand with industrialisation. To protect the domestic industries, the government restricted the import of Indian cloth into the British market. High tariffs were imposed on cotton imports into Britain. As a result, the inflow of fine Indian cotton began to decrease. Gradually, British manufacturers began to seek oversea market for their trade. Indian textile received stiff competition from other markets as it was excluded from Britain. Even if the export of manufactures decreased, there was a considerable increase in the export of raw materials to Britain's market.
