Similar to the earlier rulers, some of the kings of the sixth century and 7th century CE maintained a well-organised Army consisting of elephants, chariots, foot soldiers, and cavalry. Apart from this, they also had a special force known as the military troops, headed by military leaders who were not permanent but used whenever the king needed them. They were also not paid regular salaries like those who were part of a well-organised Army. Instead of salaries, they were given some land in the form of grants which they used to collect land revenue and maintain soldiers and horses. These people were later known as Samantha, who tried to become independent rulers.
