After the increase in the demand for indigo in Europe, the company tried to expand the production and the area that came under the cultivation of indigo. By the end of the eighteenth century, the cultivation of indigo in Bengal expanded rapidly, which changed the situation in the world market. In 1788, India supplied only about 30% of the indigo imported into the United Kingdom. Later, the proportion grew to 96 per cent by 1810. Many Scotsmen and Englishmen came to India and started entering into the indigo business because of high profits and became planters. The company also provided loans to those without money to produce indigo.
