People viewed leather workers with contempt. Leatherworkers worked with dead animals and therefore they were seen as dirty and polluting. So the people viewed them with contempt. But their demand was very High. Their demand increased during the first world war. This is because the shoes made by them were needed by the Armies. Due to caste prejudice, only the traditional leather workers and shoemakers were ready to make shoes and supply them to the Armies. They made and supplied shoes to the Armies so that they could ask for higher prices to gain more profit.
