Railways were essential for the movement of imperial troops. They needed wood as fuel and for the railway line sleepers. As the railway track expanded more and more wood was needed by the 1860s. As a result more and more trees were cut to meet the demands. Government gave out contracts to individuals who started cutting trees with no consideration. As a result the forests around the railway tracks had been cleared up. Wood was also needed for ship building. As the forests were cleared in England, the timber supply became scarce. Hence Indian forests became the new suppliers of wood to meet the growing needs and compensate for the timber supply for the ships.
