Rashsundari Devi, born in Eastern Bengal, was the first Bengali and Indian woman to publish an autobiography. Her autobiography, Amar Jiban (My Life), was released in 1876. She was a housewife from a wealthy landowner's family. She lived in a time when learning to read and write was thought to be bad luck for a woman's marriage and a sure way to leave her husband for good. At 59 years old and a few months after her husband's passing, Rashsundari became a widow. She also picked up writing skills. She eventually even authored her autobiography in Bengali, Amar Jiban, which translates to "My Life," with the support of her family. When it was ultimately published in 1876, she was in her sixties, maybe the first Bengali autobiography ever and the first text ever written in Bengali by a woman.
