Richard Arkwright is credited with creating the first cotton mill, not a metal industry. Before the cotton mill, the cloth production process was decentralised; it was spread all over the countryside, with different households engaged in different stages of production. With the innovation of the cotton mill, all the various stages of production were brought under one roof and management. Factories also had a vast space, allowing huge investment in machines, which was not possible earlier and speeding up the production process.
