It emerged as a small state at the end of the Vedic period, with ties to the neighbouring Videha kingdom. It is culturally distinct from the Painted Grey Ware culture of the Vedic Kuru-Panchala period to its west, following independent development towards urbanisation and the use of ironwork. Ikshvaku and his heirs made Ayodhya the Kosala capital, according to the Puranas and the epic Ramayana. Shravasti was the capital of Kosala during the Mahajanapada period (6th - 5th centuries BC), but the late Maurya kings (2nd - 1st centuries BC) issued their coins from Ayodhya.
