In order to limit journalistic freedom, the Calcutta Supreme Court imposed a number of rules in the 1820s. Newspapers that would laud British rule were first encouraged by the company. Numerous editors presented Governor General Bentinck with urgent requests, and he agreed to change the Press Laws. The attitude toward press freedom shifted with the 1857 uprising. As they turned more nationalist, outraged Englishmen desired control over the local press. Vernacular Press Act passed in 1878. It gave the government broad authority to restrict articles and editorials published in the local press. The local newspapers issued in various provinces were now regularly monitored by the government. Newspapers were notified when a story was judged seditious, and if they disregarded the notification, the government would seize the press and take the printing equipment.
